WHAT OUR 333 MIDLAND ARTISTS SAY
Jan Brown
I’m very honored to be amongst this outstanding group of artists. Everyone here supports each other even through the sluggish periods. 333 Midland opened me up to many opportunities to show my work and become part of a family.
Taurus Burns
I like it because it smells nice.
Ann Smith
Taurus Burns it's funny, but you're right. It smells like art supplies and processes.

Taurus Burns they don’t call it an ol’ factory for nothin’… Taurus Burns Okaaay, for real this time: I’ve been a fan of 333 since the very first Big Art Show… the whole place just had this vibe that I wanted to be a part of. I jumped at the chance to get a studio in 2020, and honestly it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I love my studio, and I feel like the other folks here are just like me: passionate about making art and sharing it with the world. |

Having a space at 333 midland is a dream come true. The very first time I attended a show in this building years ago-I knew it would somehow be in my future. Happy to be here. Michael Ross I can say for real that 333 Midland was a major turning point in my art practice. The space itself, the attached gallery, and the community that Robert has fostered here - all of these things come together to form an institution with a huge impact both on the resident artists and on art in Detroit at large. |

A Detroit Art Gallery owner told me a few years ago that the Midland factory and gallery would one day be famous for its unique character and excellent studio space but mostly for the talented and diverse artists it attracts. I am fortunate to be a part of this great community of artists. I can walk down the corridor a see art being made in so many different styles, materials, techniques and stop and share ideas. I am sure that being at 333 has helped me grow as an artist. |

Smitten upon first sight of 333 Midland for the Big Paintings Show in 2014, I committed myself to the space. The energy, creativity and fantastic art compelled me back every time I discovered an event there. I wandered the giant, drafty building, wanting to find every ghost of its past and glimpse the future that might be. I moved into my own studio in March of 2018 after years of making encaustic art outside when the conditions were right enough. (In Michigan, this was too rare). Having ventilation, good light, some temperature control, and a consistent space have enabled me to be more systematic in my practice. I wear a lab coat usually as well as a curious mind and the will to experiment. |
Having four walls to plaster with my art has enabled me to reference my own history and themes as I work towards what is next. It's also such a relief to be able to make messes, make smells, and make noise - and be separate from the sanctuary of my house. We regularly have open studios, and I adore the chance to have folks see where the creative life dreams. Everyone’s' eyes seem a bit wide when they tour here and I am so happy to walk people around and point out the many paintings, sculptures, and mess of my colleagues. My colleagues at 333 Midland might be among the best elements of being here. They inform, encourage, teach, dispel and so much more. I am so proud of them and proud to be among them.
This region and this country would benefit enormously from having the Big Art.
I am so excited about The BIG Art and what it could do for Detroit, the creative community, and beyond. Robert constantly works to improve 333 Midland, while fostering an environment that is safe, collaborative, and empowering. He has supported the community of Highland Park and contributes so much to the greater creative culture. He has facilitated a sense of giant possibilities.

As a full-time artist, I understand the need for affordable workspace and the importance of support from other artists and the local community. Robert has certainly demonstrated a successful management style with his work at 333 Midland. The BIG Art represents a terrific opportunity to create a lasting cultural hub for the Detroit Art scene.

I can personally attest to Rob’s ability to develop and manage an arts complex, as I have been witness to the transformation of 333 Midland from its inception as a rough-edged start-up into a creative and vital cornerstone of Detroit’s arts community. I am fully confident that Rob can do the same at The BIG Art.

I had ideas about the works that I would create when I became a resident artist at 333 Midland. But once I settled in, it wasn't long before the open space and contagiousness of the creative spirits of my fellow residents had influenced the scale and ambition of the body of work that I would come to produce. |
